Who can apply?

  • British citizens (British Nationality Act 1981) who are resident in the UK.
  • Anyone aged 18 and above on 31st December 2010.
  • People with a passion for their subject who cannot resist sharing their passion and thus inspiring others.
  • Existing Churchill Fellows may not re-apply.

What kind of projects will be considered?

  • Projects that will bring real benefit to you as an individual and will enable you to bring positive benefit to your community or field of interest.
  • Projects that would be unlikely to be funded from other sources.
  • Projects that involve travel overseas for between 4 and 12 weeks.
  • No qualifications are required, applications are judged on the individual and the merit of the project.

What kind of projects will NOT be considered?

  • Applications for 'gap year' activities, courses, academic studies or student grants will not be considered. This includes electives, degree placements, internships and post-graduate studies, unless real and wider benefits to others in the UK can be demonstrated.
  • Projects that stand to benefit the individual only with no potential for wider benefit, will not be considered.
  • We cannot fund joint projects, teams or team members, but expedition leaders can apply under the Exploration, Adventure and Sport category.
  • Applications for less than 4 weeks of overseas travel will not be considered.

How will my application be assessed?

  • Your application will need to have a well thought through project that clearly demonstrates some wider benefit to your community or field of interest, not just to yourself.
  • You will need to explain how you are going to disseminate the results of your Fellowship so that the benefits reach the widest audience.
  • If short-listed for interview, you will need to show that you have the motivation and drive to fulfill your plans to a high standard and that you possess a strong commitment to your chosen subject.

If successful, what will I need to do?

  • Plan your Fellowship travels within your awarded grant and according to the administrative guidelines, which you will be sent.
  • Submit a report within 6 months of your return detailing your Fellowship findings and conclusions.
  • Disseminate the results of your Fellowship widely, to ensure you achieve the maximum benefit.
  • Join and support your local Association of Churchill Fellows.
