Terms
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (hereafter ‘The Trust’) will provide a grant of £3000 per annum to fund one Archives By-Fellow at Churchill College, to undertake an academic term of original research in the Churchill Archives Centre and the related resources of the University of Cambridge. This grant is available to UK citizens only.
Funding
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust will make an annual grant of £3000 to fund an Archives By-Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. This grant will be paid by the Trust to the Bursar at Churchill College, who will then disburse it to the approved By-Fellow after deducting the relevant accommodation and catering charges. The size of the grant from the Trust will be reviewed annually by the Director of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and the Bursar of Churchill College.
Selection
The appointment of all Archives By-Fellows is dependent upon the recommendation of the Archives Committee, which meets once each academic term. Archives Committee recommendations must then be approved by Fellowship Electors. The Archives Committee has approved a new timetable for applications. All applicants for a given academic year will be asked to apply by 31 December of the previous year, and the applications will then be considered together at the Lent term meeting of the Archives Committee. This system will take effect from 31 December 2008 for the academic year 2009-10.
The Archives Committee will advertise the By-Fellow scheme, particularly to UK scholars at the beginning of their research careers who might benefit from this opportunity to develop an association with the Churchill Archives Centre and Churchill College.
When considering applications for By-Fellowships, the Archives Committee will also consider eligibility for the grant, and - where appropriate – will recommend to the Trust that a particular By-Fellow be awarded the grant for a given term in that year.
Once the By-Fellowship has been approved by Fellowship Electors, and the recommendation for the grant has been approved by the Trust, the Trust will inform the successful By-Fellow and announce the By-Fellowship in the press. The Director of the Archives Centre will inform the Bursar and follow up with the By-Fellow.
Obligations
The By-Fellow in receipt of the grant must:
- Take up their By-Fellowship in order to receive the grant. It is expected that they will be resident in Churchill College for some of the term of the By-Fellowship.
- Be prepared to give a talk or seminar or equivalent contribution, as agreed with the Director of the Archives Centre.
