Opportunities For Bursaries
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust is offering bursaries at Churchill College Cambridge, the national and Commonwealth memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. These are worth up to £2,000 a year to young UK citizens with outstanding ability and personality. These bursaries are intended to ensure that students are able take up the great opportunity afforded to them by the prospect of studying at Cambridge University and Churchill College. This joint initiative underlines both the Trust's ethos and the College's commitment to widen access to Cambridge University. Up to ten bursaries may be awarded each year, for the duration of an undergraduate degree, with the additional opportunity of an overseas travel grant awarded once during their time at the College for academic or charitable purposes.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Bursary you must be a UK citizen, and have applied to Churchill College through the normal undergraduate application process. Any UK citizen who is offered a place (conditionally or unconditionally) at Churchill College may ask to be considered for a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Bursary.
Application for a Bursary is by letter from the candidate, addressed to the Senior Tutor at the College, explaining why the candidate feels that they should be considered for one of these bursaries and mentioning not just their academic record but, for example, their other interests or service to the community. Applicants for the bursaries should also give some indication of their family’s financial circumstances, and the extent to which a bursary would help with financial hardship during their time at Cambridge. The closing date for receipt of letters of application for the bursaries is normally 1st March each year. Further information can be obtained from the College's Admissions Office (admissions@chu.cam.ac.uk or 01223 336202). Interviews for short-listed candidates will be held in late March/Early April.
The Bursary will last for the three to four years of an undergraduate degree at Churchill College, subject to satisfactory performance. The amount awarded may be reviewed after the Local Education Authority financial assessment has been made.
Other Bursary Opportunities
These Bursaries will run in parallel with the Cambridge University Bursary Scheme, which is run by the Newton Trust. A student who is awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust bursary will still be eligible for additional financial assistance from the University scheme.
Winston Churchill Memorial Trust
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust was created immediately after Sir Winston's death in 1965 as a living tribute to our 'Greatest Briton'. Since then the Trust has awarded some 4250 Travelling Fellowships to UK citizens with the aim that they should acquire knowledge that would make them more effective in their work, whilst enriching themselves, their communities and, ultimately, the United Kingdom. The ethos of the Trust is to offer its Fellows and Bursars the challenge of “the Chance of a Lifetime”.
