Background

The Fellowship

2001

Swimming development
In May 2001 Dawn set off for the World Swim Coaches Conference in Brisbane where she met teaching and coaching contacts who were extremely helpful to her during her stay in Australia. Among the many highlights of her Fellowship was the period she spent observing and assisting the Australian National team's training camp in preparation for the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She travelled widely around Australia collecting experiences, contacts, inspiration and making friends with whom she is still in touch. On her return to the UK Dawn was invited to speak at many local and national conferences about her time in Australia, which enabled the benefits of her Fellowship to be very far reaching.

The Results

When Dawn undertook her Fellowship she was the Swimming Development Officer for Newcastle City Council and had already received two Coach of the Year awards and from 1997 to 2000 was head coach of the British Swimming Junior Team.

Since returning from her Fellowship Dawn has gone on to be Team Manager with British Swimming and Team Manager of the National Senior Team at training camps across the globe and at major international events including the European Championships in Budapest and Helsinki in 2006 and the World Championships in Melbourne in 2007.

In April 2007 she was offered another ‘opportunity of a lifetime' when she was seconded from her local authority role for 18 months and appointed Senior Team Manager of the British Swimming Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games!

Finally, for now, in March 2009 Dawn was appointed full time Senior Team Manager for the British Swimming team and so will be involved through to and beyond, with London 2012. She has this to say about her Fellowship, "I must encourage everyone to apply for ‘the opportunity of a lifetime' as it has given me opportunities I believed in but didn't know I could make happen."
