Kunqu Opera at the British Museum

Fellow Kathy Hall and her Kunqu Ensemble perform at the British Museum.

This free performance is part of the British Museum's Friday Late programme in conjunction with the exhibition Ming: Fifty Years that Change China. There will be a range of other free-of-charge activities in The Great Court that evening, presented by BM Adults Programme.

Kathy will be doing a Kunqu solo performance with the Kunqu Ensemble entitled In Pursuit of the Dream from The Peony Pavilion 〈牡丹亭 – 寻梦〉 by Tang Xianzu of the Ming Dynasty. This virtuoso solo scene for the Kunqu guimendan (‘refined young lady’s role’) takes the audience into the vast, empty garden of a Ming Dynasty mansion. There, Du Liniang, a secluded high-born maiden, retraces her dream of love with a young scholar. She re-lives their brief tender moments together, only to mourn a love now beyond her reach.
