School of Natural Building to be launched in West Yorkshire

The School, in Todmorden, will be the first of its kind, established by strawbale building company Straw Works following an increase in demand for training in natural building techniques.

Natural building centres around building healthy, affordable housing using materials such as straw, lime and clay, timber and hemp.

Principal, Fellow Barbara Jones, researched the use of waste plant products as building materials during her 1995 Fellowship. She pioneered strawbale building in the UK through her previous business, Amazon Nails, and has been involved with hundreds of successful strawbale buildings in her long career. In 2011 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Construction.

“I truly believe we have found a way for ordinary people to get involved in building again, through simple techniques and affordable methods,” says Barbara.

Anyone interested in training to be a natural builder can find out from Straw Works, or contact strawworks@gmail.com.
