Best practice in foreign language teaching for native English speakers

Inspired by the report ‘Languages: The State of the Nation’, published in February 2013, which revealed that we were suffering from a growing deficit in foreign language skills, I decided to investigate best practice in modern foreign language teaching and learning among native English speakers in Australia and New Zealand, with a focus on motivation and engagement. I visited schools, government departments and educational researchers in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, to establish how they were raising the profile and uptake of languages in their schools.
