Science & Technology

Deepesh Patel

Deepesh is a science student and STEM Ambassador with a passion for communicating science to young people. Coinciding with the UN's international year of forests, Deepesh wanted to investigate whether deforestation is likely to impact potential drug development, given that over 40% of our medicines derive from forests. He travelled to the Amazon and Canada and on his return had a stand at the British Science Fair where he inspired young people from across the country.

Steve Owens

In April 2011 Steve set off for north America to learn how Dark Sky places are established, maintained and used to the best effect for the local community. Steve is a Science Communicator and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He also led the establishment of the UK's first Dark Sky Park in Galloway Forest. He is still blogging about Dark Skies and related events

Tom Ziessen

Tom is keen to contribute to public debate on the use of brain scanning technologies for 'lie-detection'. He travelled to India and the US to investigate cases where brain wave scanning has been used as evidence in criminal cases.

Richard Dennis

Richard travelled around Africa looking at the feasibility of a solar powered generation linked by wireless technology.
