Creative writing to benefit older people and develop dementia friendly communties

The aim of my study visit to Canada and USA was to learn more about creative writing with people with dementia and its links to developing dementia friendly communities; I learnt of the science and philosophy proving benefits of creative activities in dementia care, bringing calm, communication, maintain sense of identity. Avoiding ‘reminiscence’ and stereotyping of people with dementia ‘living in the past’. Working collaboratively with words together with paint, music, performance, animation or installation, I creative activities can give people with dementia a voice in decisions that affect dementia friendly communities.
