Engaging youth with social issues using devised theatre and dramaturgy

This report explores how theatre projects in New York City and further afield in the USA are developing innovative practices to engage young people with social issues through devised theatre and dramaturgy. A series of case studies spanning organisations ranging from Broadway Theatres to local community education collectives, this report questions and describes why and how theatre enables young people to speak about society and how it shapes and affects them. Topics explored include interactive dramaturgy, new writing, long form improvisation and process drama, with a particular focus on projects which creatively harness empathy as force for social engagement.
