Fellows' Collaborations - Suicide Prevention & Support
In 2014, Helen Lee-Savage and Anne Embury (both Fellows of 2014) both undertook Fellowships with a focus on suicide prevention and support for people bereaved by suicide.
They have since delivered presentations on their findings at an event in 2015 in Truro organised as part of the South West Zero Suicide Collaborative, and were involved in plans for a follow-up event at Truro’s County Hall on International Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September. They also spoke on a local radio show about their passion to reduce suicide. More recently, they have facilitated workshops at a South West Zero Suicide event in Truro in July 2016.
Helen, who is a senior clinical nurse with Cornwall Foundation Trust, and Anne, who is the Suicide Liaison Service Lead with an NHS-funded suicide postvention service for Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, have met to discuss improving the experience families have when bereaved by the suicide of a loved one who has been receiving mental health services in Cornwall. They are hoping to create a feedback system so that the concerns of relatives bereaved by suicide can be acknowledged and acted upon. Cornwall Foundation Trust have already, at Helen’s instigation, changed their clinical governance to ensure that bereaved families are given information about the Suicide Liaison Service.
Helen and Anne have both been involved in coordinating a special service of reflection for people affected by suicide, which will be held at Truro Cathedral.
