Sally Hodgson's Story
As the only woman in her field, Sally Hodgson occupies a unique place amongst the forty or so mastercraftsman dry stone wallers in the UK. Sally, who has been running a successful dry stone walling business since 1989, travelled to India (Himachal Pradesh) and Norway in 1994.
Her research enabled her to compare and contrast the construction of dry stone buildings and houses in two very different climates. She also learned a great deal about sound construction, insulation and applying appropriate roofs. Since completing her Fellowship, Sally has made slideshow presentations based on the knowledge she acquired and on her adventures as a waller in the Arctic with her sister, who is a waller in Canada. Today, Sally is one of the top dry stone walling instructors in Derbyshire and teaches for Groundwork, the National Stone Centre and Derbyshire Eco Centre.
