Biography

I am currently an assistant head at Wimbledon High School (GDST).

My project seeks to gain insight into effective interventions which reduce black students' experience of racism in schools and its associated negative impact on mental health. My learning will take place in the USA and Canada where anti-racism interventions have greater government oversight.

My interest in this area stems from my experience as an educator where I have witnessed the impact of racism on the mental health of black students. Moreover, as the inclusion lead in my school, I have become increasingly aware of the work that needs to be done more widely to address racism more consistently within UK schools.

The insight gained from my Fellowship will allow me to work with UK networks to develop and pilot anti-racism interventions. Beyond this, I hope the findings will lead to (1) tangible changes to anti-racist frameworks throughout the UK and (2) better safeguarding policies and procedures which truly incorporate the needs of black children. I also hope the project will encourage others to undertake further research in this field, thereby developing a greater evidence base for school-based anti-racism work.
