I am a retired veterinary surgeon having qualified from Edinburgh in 1960. My first post was as an assistant to Messrs Noble, Marshall & Oakley MsRCVS of March Cambs. I became a partner in the practice in 1963. In 1966 my wife and I opened a branch practice at Chatteris Cambs. I was awarded the FRCVS in 1972 for my thesis 'Dystocia in the sow.' I was appointed a lecturer in veterinary obstetrics at Edinburgh in 1976. In 1980 I returned to my home city of Cambridge when I was appointed as University Physician to Cambridge University Veterinary School. I remained in that post for 19 years before taking early retirement but continuing to teach part time. I was awarded the DVM&S (Edinburgh) in 1985 for my thesis 'Bovine Dystocia'. In 2002 I was appointed as Senior Tutor at St Edmund's College Cambridge. My Churchill Fellowship was in 1982 and I studied animal welfare as applied to Veterinary Obstetrics in Europe and Scandinavia.
