I’m a cultural activist, practice-based researcher, & filmmaker. I established (2009) & lead arts & culture agency They Eat Culture in the UK’s (then) newest city, Preston, to explore & articulate life in challenging times & understand how to raise the cultural temperature, build aspirations, address social needs, & engage communities. Telling stories from the margins, my work contributes to radical, ethical placemaking. Cutting my teeth as an indie filmmaker & training as a documentarist, I started working inside communities, broadcasting character-led films based around people & their relationships with where they live, often places & lives under pressure. I published academic research around alternative media & citizenship, & its relationship to political identities in protest, taught media & cultural studies & am a Royal Society of Arts Fellow. My personal practice plays & experiments around creative truth/lies of documentary through arts, culture, & trans/media work.
